Reality Check: Project Runway, Season 6, Episode 2

I'll be the first to admit that I've developed an inexplicable pleasure in watching reality TV personalities. There's just something so satisfyingly entertaining in watching real people fight their way - tooth and nail, to the top. Why watch fictional drama when you can capture the real deal on camera for the whole world to see?

On last night’s episode of Project Runway, the intensity ratcheted up a notch when the designers were faced with a rather large challenge. They were asked to design a chic maternity look for supermodel and mom-to-be, Rebecca Romijn, while keeping in mind a tailored and elegant silhouette that would flatter her curves.

While weighing their options, the contestants looked slightly panic stricken, most of whom admitted that they had never created maternity clothing before. But as they buckled down to work, the individuality and creativity of each designer became quickly apparent.

Louise captured the understated glamour of the 1940’s with one of her signature cocktail dresses that the judges agreed displayed excellent craftsmanship and a great attention to detail.

Althea, the Southern Belle from Charleston, SC, used a dark, dramatic blue jersey to create a floor length evening look that was both accentuating and flattering, making her my favorite designer of the night.

And Shirin stole the night with her elegantly draped red dress and a well-tailored coat lined in a fun, complimentary print. With an interesting neckline and gorgeous pleating around the baby bump, Shirin proved that she knows exactly what every pregnant woman craves. The judges all agreed that her dress was the most wearable look of the night and named her the winner of the challenge.

However, the most entertainingly ironic part of the show by far was watching the stick thin models strut down the runway with a disproportionately huge bulge strapped around their waists. As if these women could conceivably carry 30 pounds of dead weight around their midsections as if they were nothing!

The judges finally narrowed it down to the two designers who managed to fall too short of the mark this week. Once again Mitchell found himself in the bottom two after producing a sloppy pair of shorts, in which the judges all agreed they would never wear. Malvin took the challenge a little too literally, using the concept of fertility to create an unflattering white top that was supposed to resemble an egg.

Personally, I was really torn between these two. On the one hand, Mitchell really should have stepped up his game after last week’s disappointment. However, Malvin’s outfit, complete with black feathers that supposedly represented the "mother hen," was just a little too bizarre for my taste.

Had Malvin been able to separate his concept from the construction and create something more relatable; both to the viewers and to the judges, he would have stood a much better chance. In the end, the judges decided to send Malvin home and give Mitchell a third chance... but not without a stern warning from Klum.

Tune in next Thursday at 10 pm to see if he can redeem himself before Klum gives him the boot!

Reality Check: Project Runway, Season 6, Episode 1

Last week, season 6 of Project Runway premiered on the Lifetime Network, giving reality show junkies and fashionistas across the country a new reason to cancel their Thursday night plans and tune in to prime time television. When a new cast of equally talented designers, some traveling as far as Kansas City and Minnesota, all converged on New York City's fashion district. The brilliant and beautiful Heidi Klum spared no expense in welcoming them in. After spanning their spacious new apartment, the giddy cast mates were invited on to the roof where Tim Gunn and Klum greeted them with flutes of bubbly.

But the royal treatment came to an abrupt halt when Gunn and Klum announced the designers' first challenge; to create a red carpet worthy look that expressed each designer's unique point of view. The budget was $200 with a deadline of two days, and the cast hurried to Mood Fabrics.

This season's cast boasts an eclectic mix that is sure to bring lots of surprises and, of course, drama. The threat of elimination became immediately and personalities begin to flare as the cast realized that their dresses would either make or break their chances.

First, there is Johnny Sekalis who tried out numerous times, but had to battle his drug addictions before finally landing a spot. After four sketches and a few failed sewing attempts, Johnny lost his cool and wondered if the pressure would be too much to handle. After a quick pep talk from Gunn, he was ready to kick his demons. He ended up producing a glamorous dress that he envisioned an actress wearing to her movie premier.

Next we have Mitchell Hall, fresh from design school, who wants to create a flowy dress that is reminiscent of a heroine in a Victorian novel. But after spending hours "smocking" the collar and front of the dress, he realizes that his model is actually five inches taller than he had been told. He scraps the majority of the dress and, with little time to spare, stitches completely sheer fabric around his model, resulting in what looks more like a nightgown than a red carpet gown.

But when it came down to business, Klum and her assemblage of fashion royalty (Nina Garcia, fashion director at Marie Claire and designer Michael Kors) decided to eliminate the quirky Kansas City native, Ari Fisher and her avant garde style. Her inability to focus and channel her creativity resulted in a silver dress that resembled a space-age soccer ball and, in the end, sent her packing.

And on a brighter note, it was the inexperienced Christopher Straub, who stole the show with his edgy yet youthful black cocktail dress, winning him immunity in the next challenge and hopefully a couple nights of restful beauty sleep. Be sure to tune in to Lifetime tonight at 10p.m. for Episode 2!!

Project Runway announces

Lifetime IN .... Bravo OUT

If you’re a diehard PR fan such as me, you’ll notice that it’s been a while since the show last aired. I’ve been trying to record the upcoming series and no information was provided. Words of cancellation whispered throughout the air…. Is Project Runway cancelled; if so why and when? If not, when is it going to air? That’s because the innovative design-competition series was tangled up in a lawsuit involving NBC Universal, which owns Bravo, the Weinstein Co. and the Lifetime channel.

Last April NBC Universal sued Weinstein after the company landed a $150 million deal with Lifetime for the series that features supermodel Heidi Klum as host. Now after many talks from both sides, the lawsuit has finally been settled. In September, a New York Supreme Court justice issued a temporary ban preventing Weinstein from taking “Runway” or any spinoff to Lifetime and argued that Weinstein violated NBC’s “right of first refusal” for the show. Weinstein says that there was no such thing in the contract; only that NBC Universal was offered the deal and was outbid.

In a statement issued yesterday, NBC Universal and Weinstein will compensate the media company “for the right to move ‘Project Runway’ to Lifetime. All parties are pleased with the outcome.” Lifetime’s CEO Andrea Wong stated Lifetime “the perfect home” for the series. She added the network was “thrilled” to proceed with Klum, Tim Gunn, Nina Garcia and Michael Kors.

All the while this legal mumbo jumbo was going on; the show’s 6th season kept rolling and will air this summer. Thank God! Bravo will replace PR’s slot with a new series “The Fashion Show,” featuring Kelly Rowland (formerly of Destiny’s Child) as a judge on May 7. I am oh so relieved that Project Runway is coming back to TV. I can’t wait to see who’ll be the next Christian, Santino, or Michael. Wherever Project Runway goes I go. In the words of Heide Klum “Auf Wiedersehen.”

Food for Thought: If Bravo really wanted to compete, they should offer Christian his own show!
