How To Dress If You're Apple-Shaped

Here’s the good news about being a bit thick around the middle: It’s easy to disguise.

You Will Need:
Clothes that elongate your figure
One-piece swimsuits

Step 1
Visually distract from the roundness of your torso with deep V-neck tunics, blouses with asymmetrical bottoms, and wrap-around sweaters. Avoid turtlenecks and busy patterns. Don’t wear tops shorter than your hipbone.

Step 2
Elongate your figure with sheath dresses that come with a matching long coat or jacket. Empire-waist dresses are also flattering.

Step 3
Wear tailored jackets that nip in at the middle, and leave them unbuttoned. This will create the illusion of a waist. Choose jackets that are the length of your fingertips when your arms are at your side.

Step 4
Choose trousers and skirts whose zipper is on the side or the back to avoid calling attention to your stomach.

Step 5
Wear belts that define your waist, like belts around coats and dresses, but avoid them on pants, since they can add bulk to your waist. Look for low-waisted skirts and pants, which cut across the stomach making it look half its size.

Step 6
Favor one-piece swimsuits, which are good at camouflaging a round torso. Try a surplice style, which is a wraparound bodice. It helps minimize a large stomach.

How To Dress If You're a Tall Woman

Make the most of your height with these wardrobe tips. You Will need:

NeedBelts
Waist-length jackets
Kitten heels
Short or flared skirts
A-line dresses
High-waisted trousers
Skinny jeans
Big prints
Bright colors
Nipped-in jackets (optional)
Knee-high boots (optional)

Step 1: Get horizontal
Break up your long vertical silhouette with horizontal lines – stripes; thick belts, especially in a contrasting color; shoulder details, and waist-length jackets. If you have a boyish figure, choose jackets that nip in at the waist to create an hourglass figure.

Step 2: Stand tall
Wear kitten heels, which are slim heels one and a half inches to two inches tall; they make legs look better than flats. Avoid chunky shoes with thick heels.

Step 3: Tuck it in
Tuck shirts into pants to create a visual break between your legs and your torso. Tucking pants into boots also looks good on tall women.

Step 4: Skirt the issue
Wear skirts that end above or at the knee. If you like a longer skirt, choose one that’s flared to prevent a stick-straight vertical line. A-line dresses work for the same reason. If you wear a pencil skirt, team it with a blouse in a contrasting color. Got mile-high legs? Team a short skirt with knee-high boots.

Step 5: Get a leg up
If you have a long torso, shorten it with high-waisted trousers. If you’ve got long, toned legs, show them off in skinny jeans. Wear regular-length pants as cropped pants.

Step 6: Use prints to your advantage
Use big prints and bright colors to your advantage: Wear them on top to distract from a bigger bottom half; wear them below to downplay a generous bosom.

Milan Fashion Week: Prada RTW Spring 2010

Giant projections of chandeliers fading into doorways fading into beaches fading into more chandeliers and more doorways. For Miuccia Prada, such imagery set the tone for a fashion locale situated somewhere “between reality and fantasy.” It’s a place where postmodern Bardot types stroll around in Bermudas under couture-inspired coats with raw edges and scuba whites under chandelier pinafores. Crystals spill over shoes and handbags, and, if a girl prefers briefs to real pants, well, she’s got the legs for them. Yet if it all sounds like youth, beauty and not-quite-innocence, stop there, as this lineup pulsed with the iron grip of the designer’s womanly control.

In a vacuum, this was a beautiful, focused collection. Chez Prada, it made for an inviting palate-cleanser concocted from beloved motifs — tailored, tacky, minimal, decorated, even a beachy postcard or several, cousins to that scenic-print outing of yore — into something that felt familiar yet fresh. Most significantly, it felt like a bridge to somewhere else. After last season’s Forties’ tour de force, which itself followed a series of major statement shows, Prada here offered what soon might prove to have been a calming interlude between major moments. She is one of the few designers working today who can whip such a transition into genuine fashion.

Reality Check: Project Runway Season 6, Episode 6

At 10:58 last night, I was stopped dead in my tracks. Heidi and her entourage had made their final decision and decided to eliminate Ra'Mon. I was absolutely stunned! This was exactly the kind of upset that Project Runway needed to get fans sitting up straighter in their seats. It definitely worked for me!

This week, the designers chose from five different movie genres and their challenge was to create a character within that genre and design a costume for it. And, just to raise the stakes a little higher, the designers were only given one day to complete the challenge. This challenge truly tested each designer's time management skills and their ability to think creatively under an extremely tight deadline.

After Ra'Mon created the beautifully flowy dress that resembled seaweed, with the accompanying avante garde batik a few weeks ago, I was so suprised to see him leave after only one failed attempt. But, in the end, the judges felt his lime green Sci-Fi inspired ensemble looked more like a messy swamp monster.

Instead, the judges allowed Louise to stay for one more week, even though she had never been a challenge winner and, this week, made a disappointing dress that looked way too boring for the Film Noir genre it was supposed to represent.

On a more exciting note, this week also showcased some showstopping numbers by Christopher, Epperson and Nicolas. Epperson had to create a Western costume, a genre he was not thrilled with, but he made the best of his situation with a gorgeously ruffled denim dress that perfectly blurred the lines between contemporary chic and seasoned saloon girl.

Christopher chose to work in a Period genre and decided to create a dress for a vampire bride that was equal parts costume couture and runway ready.

But the winner of this week's challenge was Nicolas with his fantastical interpretation of an ice queen. His white dress, with its interestingly feathered neckline, was praised by the judges for its beautiful shape and amazing on-stage presence.

I loved this week because it presented a number of upsets and kept me on my toes. I mean, who would have thought that Nicolas would be named the challenge winner and Ra'Mon would be sent home?? Definitely not me! I hope next week throws me for another delightful loop!

Perfume of the Week: Harajuku Lovers Snow Bunnies Ltd Ed.

Shoe Of The Week: Naughty Monkey- Pretty Tree Pump

Let me just politely ask you to stop everything that you’re doing and look at this shoe that got me jumping up and down with excitement for its beauty as soon as I saw it. It's called Pretty Tree Pump - Black . I’d serenade that shoe but since my singing leaves much to be desired, let me just tell you all about it. A 4 ½ inch heel and a ½ inch platform, a mix of black and white plaid and textured black leather with brushed gold studs and that cute, girly butterfly as an unexpected accent on such sexy, amost dominatrix kind of shoe. On the outter side, you will see mostly the black leather but on the inside, flashing as you walk, the plaid fabric makes them much more interesting. The detail is such, that on the sole, the anti slip piece is shaped as a heart. Talk about spreading love wherever you go! I can see myself in these with a black, knee lenght pencil skirt and a biker jacket, can’t you? Heels.com sells this shoe for $89.99. While many celebrities flaunted black during New York's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Lauren Conrad opted out. Though some are lucky to have luscious full lips, others need a little help. For those, Sally Hansen has the Sally Hansen Salon Collagen Lip Lift in Sheer Peaceful Plum.
