Fragrances: Miss Dior Cherie by Dior

Miss Dior Cherie Perfume by Christian Dior, 1 oz Eau De Parfum Spray for Women

For us, fashion addicts who also love history, Dior reminds us of the 1950’s glamour. That’s why I am always looking forward to wearing any Dior fragrances I come across. Though it’s not exactly a new fragrance, today I've decided to talk about Miss Dior Cherie.

Elegance is timeless and never dated but when you go to a perfume store and ask for an elegant, timeless perfume, the odds of the sales assistant bringing you that “old lady” perfume are high. I never figured out why. Miss Dior Cherie by Christian Dior is a timeless perfume but with a very modern and fresh approach.

Green Tangerine, Violette, Pink Jasmine, Patchouli, Crystalline Musk, Strawberry Leaves, Caramelized Popcorn, Strawberry Sorbet are the notes on this perfume. No, I’m not kidding. Popcorn and Strawberry Sorbet are really there. As you probably know that’s extremely unusual for grown up’s perfumes but I must say they tie in so well with the rest of the scents that you won’t be able to clearly tell what’s what.

Sweet and sexy, playful but classy, soft but memorable, Miss Dior Cherie is that kind of perfume you can picture bubbly, friendly people wearing. Originally, it was intended for a younger public but I say you’re as young as you feel. This is definitely a good choice for a daytime perfume for fall and early winter. If you're thinking about buying Christmas prensents already, this would be good choice for your younger sister, for example.

The staying power is very good but not outstanding. However, if you use the body lotion as well, I can guarantee it will be extraordinary.

Beauty Solutions: Mini Wax Kit by Anastasia

Mini Wax Kit

Eyebrow hair is like no other hair. It colors and bleaches within seconds and grows at an amazing rate (of course it has a mind of it’s own and can stop growing just because it felt like it). That is why it’s such hard work taming eyebrows. I, personally, get them tweezed by a professional once a month but, to maintain at home between visits to the salon I sometimes use wax. A nice kit that helps me have brows that frame my eyes instead of distracting from them is the Mini Wax Kitby Anastasia.

The wax is sugar based so it’s gentle on your delicate skin. It has the wooden spatulas and the muslin cloths, as well as the wax and instructions. This particular kit uses warm wax so you must heat it in the microwave. Not that I need to tell you, but follow instructions carefully – you don’t want to burn yourself, much less in your eye area! A good trick to know if the wax is too hot is to test it in the inside of your wrist; if it feels just warm, then it’s a good temperature to be used on your face.

This Mini Wax kit has 14 muslin cloths so, depending on how much hair to want to wax, it will last you for up to 14 uses.

Beauty Solutions: Heated Eyelash Curler

Ardell Heated Eyelash Curler

Some people’s eyelashes are simply stubborn and won’t curl. If not even waterproof mascara can hold the curl on your lashes, consider using a heated eyelash curler. I heard some pretty scary stories about heated curlers in the past and that is probably why some people are scared of them. They key to make sure nothing bad is going to happen to your eyelashes, is to choose a good quality curler. The one I’m recommending here is the Ardell Heated Eyelash Curler.

Not only is it great to use on your own natural lashes, but it is also good to use with any kind of false eyelashes. If you know anything about synthetic hair, from which most false eyelashes are made, you know that it’s not a good idea to put heat on them. Since this curler doesn’t damage them, you can trust that it isn’t so hot that it could harm you.

Heated eyelash curlers have the benefit of also separating lashes beautifully because of the way they are made. Instead of the traditional clamp, they have a brush. This particular curler uses batteries and heats up in 15 seconds.

Micky's Guide: Sunscreen

Aveeno Active Naturals Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion for Face SPF 30 3oz.

The weather is (finally and thankfully!) getting warmer around here and, with the sun shinning, all I want to do is go for walk or go to the pool! However, I’m so pale I have to protect my skin when I’m out so that I don’t risk a very painful sunburn. Every year I hear people talking about the dangers of sun exposure and how using sunscreen correctly is important, but what I think is lacking is a guide on how to do so. We all know that from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. it’s not a good idea to be out in the sun much but do you know your phototype or what that is, even? Do you know how much sunscreen to apply? Did you know your clothes might not protect you from the sun and its effects? Keep on reading for some interesting information.

Age Shield Face Sunblock SPF 90

First and foremost, you need to know your skin. This is where phototype comes into play. Phototype is simply a pretty, intelligent and scientific word to what we usually and generally refer to as complexion or skin color – the only difference is that when you are determining your phototype, you also take into consideration your hair and eye color. Below, you can see a description of phototypes so you can determine for yourself which one you are. Please note that some people use a scale from 1 up to 10 phototypes, and some only consider 4 phototypes - so it all depends on who you’re talking to. The list below is to serve merely as an indication.

Phototype 1 - Very pale skin, often has freckles, blue/hazel eyes, blond/red hair. Always burns, usually does not tan.

Phototype 2- Fair skin, blue eyes. Burns easily, tans poorly.

Phototype 3- Darker white skin, light brown hair and eyes. Tans homogeneously after initial burn.

Phototype 4- Light brown or olive complexion. Skin Burns minimally, tans easily.

Phototype 5- Brown skin, eyes and hair. Rarely burns, tans darkly easily.

Phototype 6- Dark brown or black skin. Almost never burns, always tans darkly.

When in doubt, it is said that you are lower of the two phototypes you have the characteristics of. For instance, if you have an olive completion but you burn and then tan, you are considered to be a phototype 3 and not a 4. Now that that is set, let’s focus on the sunscreen itself.

Shelter Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 30

SPF, UVA and UVB are the letters you need to remember when shopping for a sunscreen. SPF means Sun Protection Factor and is usually how the “strength” of a product is measured. Contrary to popular belief, the number that usually follows the SPF acronym is not the percentage of protection a product offers, rather, it’s the number of times it protects your skin vs. your skin’s natural defenses. An example, so it is easier to understand, is that an SPF 15 will give your skin 15 times the protection it would have against sun rays if you applied nothing at all to it. UVA and UVB are the radiations the sun emits that are currently thought to cause damage to our skin. An easy way to remember why these are taken into consideration when companies formulate their products is to remember that UVA rays causes Aging and UVB causes Burning. Nowadays, they are thought to be equally dangerous and that is why you see sunscreen that protects both against UVA and UVB rays – these are called broad spectrum sunscreens.

Body Guard Exquisitely Light SPF 30 for Face & Body

Now you know what to look for in the front label of you sunscreen: what kind of protection it offers (UVA, UVB or both) and how much protection you’ll get from it (the SPF). What about the back label? The one with all those tiny letters that spell ingredients that are hard to pronounce and that we sometimes forget to look at? The American FDA recognizes as safe 16 active ingredients but these generally only fall into one of two categories: the absorbers and the reflectors. The names are pretty much self explanatory as to why they are different but take note that the absorbers are homosalate, octisalate (also called octyl salicylate), octinoxate (also called octyl methoxycinnamate or OMC), octocrylene, oxybenzone, and avobenzone. The reflectors are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. You will seldom find a sunscreen that has only one of these ingredients, but the higher the content of active ingredients, the better it will be.

UVA/UVB Block

Always, always choose a sunscreen that feels good on your skin – so you will be comfortable wearing it every day. The best way to be sure you like a sunscreen is to try a small sample on your skin. Long gone are the days when people with oily skin had to suffer with that sticky sunscreen all over them. There are mattifying sunscreens for your face, mousses, sprays, gels, lotions… you name it. All you have to do is take your time and choose the one you like best.

Global Health Face SPF 30 UVA/UVB Sunscreen

The last step is, of course, to apply the product you bought. You’d think this step would be pretty much straight forward, but it isn’t. First, you should apply the product about 20 minutes before leaving the house and take it with you since you should re-apply every 90 minutes or when in contact with water. If the product you bough is water resistant, it means it will resist to sweat and splashes, but not to swimming. This brings us to my very last question for now: how do you know you’re applying enough sunscreen? Certainly you don’t want to look like those tourists that apply a thick white stripe of sunscreen down their noses and leave it there just like that, without rubbing it in (stop laughing, I’ve seen it and it was not a cartoon! It was real life). Well, that is simple: you should apply 7 tablespoons of product, all over your body. Right… like we’re going to carry around a tablespoon just for the sake of it and look crazy measuring cream. The solution is to open you hand, palm facing up and, with the other hand squeeze the tube so you make a thick line that goes from the tip of your middle finger, all the way to your wrist. There you go, a tablespoon of sunscreen! Who knew we carry our own measuring spoons at all times?

I hope that this post was helpful and that the fact that it’s a little long didn’t discourage you from seeking the best sunscreen you can afford.

Formal Dress Silhouette

Polka Dotted Mermaid Gown

Prom season is rapidly approaching, so I believe some tips on formal dresses are in order. Maybe you already know what you want to wear but are you sure you will be able to go to a store and explain to the sales assistant exactly what you want? Saying “I want a dress that cinches here and here and puffs here and there” while pointing might not be the most eloquent way of telling them what you want so here’s a rundown of the most popular silhouettes. I added some images and general considerations to make it easier for you to picture the type of dress I’m referring to in each paragraph.

Ball Gown – The ball gown is basically a fitted bodice and waistline with a full skirt. Usually, an underskirt is added to make sure the skirt remains full – this underskirt can be built in the dress or it can be bought separately. This cut is a good idea if you are a little big on the hip area and would like to disguise it. With a full skirt, people won’t really know if the volume is from the skirt or if it’s you, so they won’t really pay much attention to that detail. Good examples of this style are the Mori Lee Beaded Halter Ball Gowns as the one you see in the picture to your right. I personally think this peach colour is lovely!

Empire Gown – The empire-style gown has a high waistline under the bust with a narrower skirt, sometimes with layers. It is often said to flatter thinner people but I don’t think that it is entirely true; I think it flatter anyone who doesn’t have big breasts in comparison to the rest of their frame. This is simply because this style emphasizes the size difference between your breasts and the rest of your torso. If you have big boobs for your frame, the size difference will be much bigger, possibly making you look disproportionate. An example of this style is the Floral Printed Chiffon Evening Gown With Ruched Waist. I absolutly adore the movement on this particular pattern. Even if you're standing still, it will look like you're floating on air, giving a very etheral feeling.

A-line Gown: This kind of gown is softly shaped at the waist and then opens up towards the hem. It is called an A-line because the skirt is in the shape of the letter "A”, narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. This is the universal shape; it flatters any body type without being too body-hugging or too loose. A-line skirts work because everything that is above the widest part (the hem line) will look smaller than it really is. A stunning example is the Spring Floral A-line Prom Dress, which I am so in love with, it's not even funny. Too bad my prom was ages ago...

Sheath Gown: The sheath silhouette has a slim bodice and skirt. This style is very suggestive of the 1940’s and, since it is a simple cut, you can have a lot of fun with color, texture and/or embellishments. It’s the dress equivalent to a pencil skirt, so to say. Often you will find this kind of dress with a side slit or even a train, not only to make it sexier, but also to allow you to walk more comfortably. An example of this cut is Yellow Long Dresses by La Femme. This particular dress flares a little towards the bottom so, while still considered a sheath silhouette because this flaring is not ver pronounced, it’s easier to walk in, more comfortable and balances out your figure.

Mermaid Gown: Simply put, it’s a variation of a sheath silhouette. The mermaid-style gown is formfitting and flares from the knees down. It often has a ribbon or embellishments at the line where the skirt starts to flare. It enhances your curves and, if you have an hourglass shape, this is the most perfect silhouette for you. It is very reminiscent of the red carpet and it’s really glamorous. A train could be part of a mermaid style dress though it is more common with a Sheath gown since the demarcation at the line where the skirt flares makes it more difficult to get the train to look right. A good example of this particular style is the Polka Dotted Mermaid Gown. Polka dot is really girly and will take away from the heavier look a solid black dress has.

Now that you know the right names for the most popular silhouettes and can look at a dress and determine what type of silhouette it has, it will be much easier to convey to others what you want for your prom or special occasion. What’s your favorite silhouette? Let me know in the comments as I am really curious. I’m undecided between Empire and Mermaid…

Perfume of the Week - Very Hollywood by Michael Kors

As days get warmer, most of us reach for the lighter fragrances. Smooth florals, light fruity smells and younger scents are on our lists. Very Hollywood by Michael Kors is exactly the kind of perfume most people gravitate towards on this time of year. The notes are mandarin, iced bergamot, wet jasmine, ylang-ylang, raspberry, gardenia, orris (which I have no clue as to what it smells like), creamy amber, soft white moss and vetiver.

If a perfume has mandarin and raspberry, you can expect that “lemonade” or ice-cream scent that is very fresh and playful and if it has any kind of jasmine in it, you can expect me to like it (gardenia is also from the jasmine family, just in case you didn’t know).

With a name like Very Hollywood I was expecting something glamorous and grown up so to speak. This fragrance however is very casual and young. I think it is perfect for those of you who are younger or maybe just starting to get into the perfume world.

Michael Kors seems to have decided to add a bright and sparkly scent to his perfume line in order to appeal to a more vast audience, who might have more modern tastes. I think this does the trick but if you’re in the market for something more sensual, you might want to try something else.
