Thrift Store Fashion Do's & Don'ts

I was never a consignment or thrift store shopper growing up. Then I moved to NYC in the summer of 2001 and was introduced to them by a friend. My “shopping life” changed. I’m exaggerating a bit here… but truly, consignment shops and thrift stores are definitely places to “hit” when you’re looking to save some money on clothes, especially if you’re holding out for some high-end labels/brands. Consignment/thrift stores are MECCAS for amazing deals on clothing, shoes, accessories (even household goods and furniture!). You’re not always going to get that “amazing find” – but, I promise you, if you look… and look hard enough, you will find. I scored one of my favorite items ever at a consignment shop – a Chanel blazer for $35.00.
But there are some DOs and DON’Ts…

DO's:

1.) DO plan to take your time
. You will absolutely need time to weed through racks of clothes. It’s not something you can (or should) breeze through. Some of the best “gems” are hidden, so really make sure you carve out enough time for yourself.

2.) DO have an idea as to what you’re looking for. It’s easier to go in looking for particular items: blouses, sweaters, jeans, pants, accessories, etc. That way you’re not making (many) impulse buys.

3.) DO know how much money you would like to spend. Just because the prices are more inexpensive than most retail stories doesn’t mean you shouldn’t budget yourself. Keep yourself aware of what prices are — and know (sometimes) you can bargain a price down.

4.) DO keep your eyes open for classic pieces. My girlfriend was able to buy a pair of black trouser pants and a gorgeous (matching) black blazer. These were items that she happened to “randomly” come across — and has been able to get a ton of use out of.

5.) DO remember: New clothing is always cycled in, so don’t give up if you don’t see anything on your first or second trip.

6.) DO remember that the perfect fit can be achieved through tailors and seamstresses! I love finding pants that fit my waist perfectly (and bummie!)… I just always need to remember that length can be altered. At consignment prices, you may still be able to find the “perfect pant” and still get them altered for a cheaper price than some high-end stores.

7.) DO remember the accessories. Look at jewelery and accessories and shoes!

Dont's:

1.) DON’T buy something if it doesn’t fit. Just walk away. As much as you really may want the way too small or way too big cashmere (perfect) sweater to fit, if it doesn’t – it won’t.

2.) DON’T buy something just because it has a high-end label. Really, it may just be a waste of money – especially if you don’t think you’ll end up wearing it.

3.) DON’T ( PLEASE DON’T) buy undies… or anything that truly, truly looks worn to the bone!

Miss Jay Promotes Follow The Model at Barnes and Noble

Last night Fashionwithfifi.com was in attendance at Jay Alexander’s (Miss Jay if you’re nasty) book signing at the Barnes and Noble located in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan. He was there to promote his new book, "Follow the Model; Miss J's Guide to Unleashing Presence, Poise, and Power."

Follow the Model; Miss J's Guide to Unleashing Presence, Poise, and Power

It was a pleasant surprise when Miss Jay arrived with two familiar Baby Phat faces, James Campbell and Kimora Lee Simmons’ sweet but brief personal assistant Mallory, who are now employed by Miss Jay. The America’s Next Top Model judge was warmly greeted by an anxiously awaiting crowd. The atmosphere was a mixture of young, old, hip, and fresh.

For this jovial, yet sassy Top Model judge, what you see on t.v. is exactly what you get in person. Miss Jay angled his head back, pursed his lips together and in a signature Wendy Williams welcome, greeted the crowd “How You Doin?!” style.

He gave a brief overview of his early fashion, childhood, and “working girl” experiences. “Don’t give it away, at least get a hamburger out of the deal. It’s called a corporation,” exclaimed Miss Jay. The reading was filled with laugh-out-loud moments such as when he suddenly stopped speaking to quiz an audience member who was patting down her lace front wig in the second row.

But Miss Jay didn’t depart without leaving behind fashion tips:

How to improve posture? “Feel comfortable in what you wear, be confident in yourself, and don’t be afraid of experimenting – do what’s comfortable to you,” said Miss Jay.

Driving 101? “Don’t drive with platform heels on, instead wear flats.”

On fashion? “If you have to think longer than 15 minutes on what accessories to wear than your dresses are wrong.”

How’d he get those sexy legs? “I walk a lot in heels.”

Plus size fashion? “Big girls stay away from bright colors and satin!”

Manicures and Pedicures? “Busted up toe nails…no monkey paws please!”

Hairy situations? “If you’re having under arm issues don’t wear a strapless dress.”

Sharing clothes? “Don’t borrow a friend’s clothes when she’s a size 2 and you’re a 22.”

Denims? “Get good jeans – no muffin tops.”

Using your boyfriend as a personal stylist? “Don’t let your man dress you… let him dress you in his imagination.”

He was even sweet enough to autograph books and show some love to his fans!

Former Baby Phat designer, Jerome LaMaar also made an appearance at the end to show his support. Glad to see that everyone's doing well post Kimora.

Street Walking: 36th Annual Village Halloween Parade

Last night Fashionwithfifi was in attendance at the 36th annual Village Halloween Parade in New York City. The theme for this year’s event was Terra Incognita – meaning unknown land. The parade, which ran from 7 pm until 10 pm, began at Spring Street and traveled north on 6 Avenue to 21st street.

Zartan and Storm Shadow

Not even rain could stop more than 2 million spectators from crowding 6th Avenue. Thousands of participants came decked out in creative spooky and humorous costumes. Michael Jackson, Capt. Jack Sparrow, Fred Flintstone, Duff Man, Jesus and Destro were some of this year’s popular costumes.

The free mile-long procession featured musical performers, break dancers, jugglers and giants on stilts. Dancers performed to Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and several Jackson impersonators popped a few moon walks and signature high kicks.

The Joker's and his girl

This year’s Halloween spectacle was quite an experience. Where else in Manhattan can you find a pimp in a wheel chair, the Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Kim Zolciak in search of Big Poppa, Wanda, Key Lo-lo and Sheneneh Jenkins all in the same place?

Made in Manhattan: Nanette Lepore

The only thing better than fashion in New York City? Fashion that's made in New York City. Yoanna House visits Nanette Lepore's Garment District atelier to see where the designer creates her feminine collections and heads to her new Madison Avenue boutique to try on some of her bright, bohemian-influenced styles.

The Nanette Lepore Firecracker Dress reminds us why we're suckers for a pretty dress. This is a floral-print silk dress with sweetheart neckline and ruching at bust. Wrap detail at skirt and hidden zipper at back. Short flutter sleeves. Polka-dot peek-a-boo lining. 35" long, measured from shoulder. Shell: 100% silk. Lining: 100% acetate.

The practical Nanette Lepore Coral Reef Corset features a ruched sweetheart neckline with ruffle trim. Fitted corset bodice with zip closure at center back. Detachable button straps. Lined. Materials: Self: 95% Cotton, 5% Polyurethane. Lining: 70% Cotton/ 27% Nylon, 3% Spandex. Measurements: Measures 16.5" from neckline.

We adore Nanette Lepore's whimsically feminine sensibility. This Leather Hold Me Tight Platform Sandalwith contrast topstitching and pleated raffia banding at upper. Contrast topstitching and buckle closure at ankle strap. 1" wooden platform and 4.5" covered heel. Rubber sole. Made in Italy.

Street Walking: Lauren Luke's Pre-Launch Party

Thursday night the Fashionwithfifi team celebrated with Lauren Luke at her pre-launch party inside the new 42nd St. & Broadway Sephora (before anyone else could see the store). Lauren was a sweetheart – socializing with everyone. When asked what makes her makeup palette different from her competitors she responded “My makeup is for the everyday woman, not super models… I went into this with something very specific in mind - a great product that works, at an affordable price that will help you embrace color and experiment more. “
Professional makeup artists were on hand giving makeovers using Lauren Luke’s five makeup kits which included three eye shadows, primer, two lipsticks, blush, and deep black eyeliner.
There was a drawing that awarded two women $500 shopping sprees each to Sephora plus another drawing that chose the 14 contestants that will participate in today’s Lauren Luke Challenge (in Times Square) for a chance to win a full set of Lauren Luke’s kits, a new Sony VAIO lap top and dinner with Lauren and her team members!

Street Walking: Taste of Times Square 2009 Edition

On June 8, 2009 we had the pleasure of attending Manhattan’s “Taste of Times Square.” In between meals, we found time to do this week's "Street Walking" segment. As usual, we came across a diverse range of fashion senses and foods. Some were good, some were bad, and some were just unexplainable. But they were all confident which made them stars in our eyes.
