Micky's Guide: Sunscreen

Aveeno Active Naturals Continuous Protection Sunblock Lotion for Face SPF 30 3oz.

The weather is (finally and thankfully!) getting warmer around here and, with the sun shinning, all I want to do is go for walk or go to the pool! However, I’m so pale I have to protect my skin when I’m out so that I don’t risk a very painful sunburn. Every year I hear people talking about the dangers of sun exposure and how using sunscreen correctly is important, but what I think is lacking is a guide on how to do so. We all know that from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. it’s not a good idea to be out in the sun much but do you know your phototype or what that is, even? Do you know how much sunscreen to apply? Did you know your clothes might not protect you from the sun and its effects? Keep on reading for some interesting information.

Age Shield Face Sunblock SPF 90

First and foremost, you need to know your skin. This is where phototype comes into play. Phototype is simply a pretty, intelligent and scientific word to what we usually and generally refer to as complexion or skin color – the only difference is that when you are determining your phototype, you also take into consideration your hair and eye color. Below, you can see a description of phototypes so you can determine for yourself which one you are. Please note that some people use a scale from 1 up to 10 phototypes, and some only consider 4 phototypes - so it all depends on who you’re talking to. The list below is to serve merely as an indication.

Phototype 1 - Very pale skin, often has freckles, blue/hazel eyes, blond/red hair. Always burns, usually does not tan.

Phototype 2- Fair skin, blue eyes. Burns easily, tans poorly.

Phototype 3- Darker white skin, light brown hair and eyes. Tans homogeneously after initial burn.

Phototype 4- Light brown or olive complexion. Skin Burns minimally, tans easily.

Phototype 5- Brown skin, eyes and hair. Rarely burns, tans darkly easily.

Phototype 6- Dark brown or black skin. Almost never burns, always tans darkly.

When in doubt, it is said that you are lower of the two phototypes you have the characteristics of. For instance, if you have an olive completion but you burn and then tan, you are considered to be a phototype 3 and not a 4. Now that that is set, let’s focus on the sunscreen itself.

Shelter Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 30

SPF, UVA and UVB are the letters you need to remember when shopping for a sunscreen. SPF means Sun Protection Factor and is usually how the “strength” of a product is measured. Contrary to popular belief, the number that usually follows the SPF acronym is not the percentage of protection a product offers, rather, it’s the number of times it protects your skin vs. your skin’s natural defenses. An example, so it is easier to understand, is that an SPF 15 will give your skin 15 times the protection it would have against sun rays if you applied nothing at all to it. UVA and UVB are the radiations the sun emits that are currently thought to cause damage to our skin. An easy way to remember why these are taken into consideration when companies formulate their products is to remember that UVA rays causes Aging and UVB causes Burning. Nowadays, they are thought to be equally dangerous and that is why you see sunscreen that protects both against UVA and UVB rays – these are called broad spectrum sunscreens.

Body Guard Exquisitely Light SPF 30 for Face & Body

Now you know what to look for in the front label of you sunscreen: what kind of protection it offers (UVA, UVB or both) and how much protection you’ll get from it (the SPF). What about the back label? The one with all those tiny letters that spell ingredients that are hard to pronounce and that we sometimes forget to look at? The American FDA recognizes as safe 16 active ingredients but these generally only fall into one of two categories: the absorbers and the reflectors. The names are pretty much self explanatory as to why they are different but take note that the absorbers are homosalate, octisalate (also called octyl salicylate), octinoxate (also called octyl methoxycinnamate or OMC), octocrylene, oxybenzone, and avobenzone. The reflectors are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. You will seldom find a sunscreen that has only one of these ingredients, but the higher the content of active ingredients, the better it will be.

UVA/UVB Block

Always, always choose a sunscreen that feels good on your skin – so you will be comfortable wearing it every day. The best way to be sure you like a sunscreen is to try a small sample on your skin. Long gone are the days when people with oily skin had to suffer with that sticky sunscreen all over them. There are mattifying sunscreens for your face, mousses, sprays, gels, lotions… you name it. All you have to do is take your time and choose the one you like best.

Global Health Face SPF 30 UVA/UVB Sunscreen

The last step is, of course, to apply the product you bought. You’d think this step would be pretty much straight forward, but it isn’t. First, you should apply the product about 20 minutes before leaving the house and take it with you since you should re-apply every 90 minutes or when in contact with water. If the product you bough is water resistant, it means it will resist to sweat and splashes, but not to swimming. This brings us to my very last question for now: how do you know you’re applying enough sunscreen? Certainly you don’t want to look like those tourists that apply a thick white stripe of sunscreen down their noses and leave it there just like that, without rubbing it in (stop laughing, I’ve seen it and it was not a cartoon! It was real life). Well, that is simple: you should apply 7 tablespoons of product, all over your body. Right… like we’re going to carry around a tablespoon just for the sake of it and look crazy measuring cream. The solution is to open you hand, palm facing up and, with the other hand squeeze the tube so you make a thick line that goes from the tip of your middle finger, all the way to your wrist. There you go, a tablespoon of sunscreen! Who knew we carry our own measuring spoons at all times?

I hope that this post was helpful and that the fact that it’s a little long didn’t discourage you from seeking the best sunscreen you can afford.

How to: Use Colored Mascara

Green, yellow, pink, blue, plum, red... Sounds like I’m describing a rainbow but I’m actually talking about mascara. Since my post on blue eyeshadow, it has been requested that I talk about colored mascaras, which are a huge summer trend. I love requests (hint! hint!) and fun makeup trends are one of the things that “make my world go ‘round”, so here are my tips and ticks.

Apart from the obvious way of applying colored mascara – using it as you would a regular black or brown one, coating all your lashes - there are a few more ways in which I like to wear color on my lashes. For instance, why not try to only use the colored mascara on your bottom lashes? It’s the ideal way of rocking this trend if you are just starting out on the whole colored lashes world, it can be work appropriate, and is a lot more forgiving in the sense that you can go seriously wild with you color and not looking like it’s Halloween. Speaking of wild colors, Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Mascara Duo in Green is a really good choice if you ask me. If you like this application method, the black part can be used in you top lashes and the colored end on you lower lashes. You'll save yourself some time by not having to look for two mascara tubes in your drawers. However, if you choose to wear mascara this way remember not to coat your bottom lashes all the way to the end because you risk getting the spidery look.

Another very interesting way of using colored mascara is just coating the base if your upper lashes with color and coat the ends with your regular black mascara. This gives a particularly interesting result when you use a color that brings your eye color out. If you have green eyes, try purple or plum mascara; for blue eyes, try golden or any warm red-based tones; for brown or hazel, try pink or blue. If you use a dark shade of the color you chose, it will be a very subtle effect but people will notice your eye color standing out a lot more and they won’t really know why is that. Well, a girl has got to have her secrets, right? Take a look at Big Fatty Mascara Colored Mascara. The have some deep shades that will look very pretty.

Finally, a very popular way of using colored mascara is to only coat the tips of your upper lashes. It will give you hint of color and fun without being overwhelming. Blue will make the white of your eyes look whiter so it will cancel some traces of tiredness. Good for those nights you didn’t get much sleep (for all the right reasons, I hope). Have you ever tried BADgal Blue by Benefit? It's a true blue that leaves your lashes glossy and fun.

Sometimes colored mascaras have little color pay off. I personally suggest that you try the mascara on your arm hairs before you buy it to see if it’s worth it. However, if you bought one already and it isn’t quite what you expected it would be, try priming you lashes with a white lash primer (the ones on those double ended mascaras will work fine) and then carefully apply the colored mascara, making sure the white primer isn’t showing.

(Disclaimer: if you sell or manufacture colored mascaras, please don’t hate me for the next paragraph.) For a more DIY mascara, what you can do is purchase a transparent mascara, carefully load the wand with the product, swirl it really well in makeup eye safe pigment, apply and then clean the bush with warm water and soap. Loading your mascara wand at first is important because you won’t be able to double dip your wand if you want the mascara to remain clear for other uses. Though this technique can be a little tricky, it’s specially good if you just want to try and see how would you look with bright colored lashes and aren’t really willing to shed a lot of money for a mascara that you may never wear. If you decide colored mascara isn’t for you, you can always use the clear mascara simply as a tool to tame your lashes and help them curl or as a brow gel. Take a look at Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara for Lash and Brow.

Did you end up buying a brightly colored mascara and hated it? Be nice and give it to your daughter or niece so she can have super fun and bright hair highlights that will come out when she washes her hair. All she has to do (or her mom, if she's too little) is select a thin section of hair and carefully run the wand on it for a couple of times. Let it dry well and then brush to remove any lumps. Repeat if necessary. On the next day or so, when she washes her hair, no more highlights and no damaged hair. As you see, everything has a solution!

Whatever you do, have fun with your makeup! Will you be adopting a splash of color in you lashes this spring and summer or are you still uncertain? Let me know in the comments.

Beauty Solution: Lemon Lust Moisture Boosting Body Balm

Though we’re already a full month into fall, some still aren't willing to let go of summer. It’s just unbearable. To keep a little “summer” in your fall and winter routine, why not use a moisturizer that reminds you of summer? A good example would be H2O+ Lemon Lust Moisture Boosting Body Balm 240ml/8oz.

We all know how important it is to moisturize during the cold weather months– our skin gets dehydrated and flaky and, on extremes, a simple caress on very dry, sensitive skin can really hurt! This particular moisturizer has fruit extracts, shea butter and aloe vera, not to mention vitamin E. Vitamin E, besides leaving your skin feeling hydrated, is responsible for healing and protecting our skin.

As this is a balm as opposed to a lotion, the consistency is thicker and richer. My best tip as far as applying it goes, is to apply it right after the shower, with your skin still warm from the hot water, your pores open and your skin is still moist. This will ensure an even better result and easy application.

Always For Me Swimwear

Here I am again, talking about summer. Today I’ll introduce you to Alwaysforme. You may have seen or read about it in tons of different fashion magazines. Their goal is to provide fashionable plus size swimwear for women all over. Their sizes range from 16W up to 26W – the W after the size means they’re Women’s Cut, so there's more room in the much needed spaces. Alwaysforme is big on swimsuits and the lovely swim dresses but they also have a small selection of extremely sexy lingerie.

My favorite way to shop around Alwaysforme is to use the coolest feature they have – shopping by body type. If you need a little bust-enhancing look at these examples I have for you.

This Ocho Rios Twist One Piece Bandeau is young and fashionable. You know how much I love polka dots, right? The straps are removable which is a plus for those who hate tan lines. This particular model has padded bra cups but no wires so which is ideal for those who don’t have full breasts or firm boobs. Also, it will minimize your waist and tame your tummy. What more can you ask for?

If you’re curious about swimdresses, The Natal Halter Swimdress With Ring may be just right for you. Its fully lined, which is important to ensure durability and quality, minimizing the waist and the hips. It has a tummy tamer and will really improve the looks of your cleavage. Besides, nobody can go wrong with a red swimsuit. Enough of black and turquise, they are much too boring!

If, on the other hand, you wear a C cup or up, you’ll need something with some more support and Alwaysforme has something for you.

I know I just said two paragraphs ago that black and turquoise swimsuits were boring but this one may very well be the exception that confirms the rule. This is one of my favorite pieces from the site. The Miraclesuit "Escape" Hidden Underwire One Piece has an underwire to provide great bust support but it’s also in a plunging form to make your décolleté look awesome. This particular style also has a tummy tamer and waist minimizer. The manufacturers say that you’re garanteed to look 10lbs thinner and that can’t hurt, can it?

Another One Piece Bandeau Swim Suit, but this time in a lovely Coral; but in pictures, seem more like a lovely Hot Pink. You can find it in turquoise, black and brown. However, the coral swimsuit has extra lining since it’s lighter. You don’t want to risk it becoming transparent when wet. It can be worn in a halter neck or strapless style and it will minize the waist, hip and stomach area.

I was told by one of the sales assistants at Alwaysforme that the best line is the Carol Wior Brand of swimwear, which was ideally manufactured for larger busted women. All of her suits contain an underwire and are fuller cuts. So you might want to check it out if these are your particular needs.

If Mother Nature was generous with you on your hips and you want to conceal that for a trip to the beach, here are some examples of what you may find at Alwaysforme.

In a cool and fun array of colours, the Two Piece Diva Skirtini might just be the best bet for you this summer. It features adjustable straps, tummy tamer and hip minimizer among other things. This bright yellow called Pineapple will speak for itself.

Another beautiful and sexy option would be the It Figures Boho Bandeau Tankini with Brief. The pattern is just too cute as it is, but to add more flare, it’s available in two gorgeous color combos. Straps are removable so if you have large hips and large boobs, this might be just right for you.

As you probably already noticed by now, if you’re looking for specific tummy tamers and waist minimizers, most, if not all, of the swimwear over at Alwaysforme have this attribute. However, if you’re still looking for the right solution, here’s some more of my picks.

Busy patterns don’t always work and I advise against them most of the time if you're trying to conceal something, but this time it worked great. Novelty One Piece Twist Front Bandeau looks pretty and comes in Hot Pink and Blue. It has a street inspired graffiti print on the front and is solid on the back to balance things out.

Still looking into prints; a Kingston Print is always classic but attention calling. As the manufactures themselves put it, "the top provides incredible support with a sewn in soft foam cup bra with extra floating mesh material under the cups and on the side of the cups for total support and comfort. This plus size suit is fully lined and is extremely flattering." Plus, it’s on sale.

Alwaysforme also has a vast choice of cover-ups so if that’s what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to check them out.
